Over 50 and don't feel it?
Do you want the opportunity to do all those things which you
couldn't do when you were younger? Such as Sailing, Jet Ski-ing,
Abseiling, Raft Building, Archery, White Water Rafting?
Then come and join us at the 50+ Adventure Club in Northamptonshire. We do all those things - and more! This picture shows some Members of the Club puzzling how to build a raft one lovely sunny Sunday morning at Grafham Water. We succeeded, rowed without it sinking and had a lot of fun. |
Our Club was formed in 1999 with the encouragement and enthusiasm of the Sports and Recreation Officer of East Northamptonshire Council who brought together a few dozen complete strangers to become our first group of intrepid 50+ Adventurers. The Club is now run by its own committee which puts on a programme of activities that are challenging and interesting.
The Club has over 100 members all of whom have succeeded in a wide variety of activities that have amazed themselves (and their grandchildren!). Our activities have ranged from maintaining physical fitness by cycling around Rutland Water , walking in Derbyshire (on a VERY wet day!), sailing, canoeing along the River Ouse to the slightly bizarre activity of raft building at Grafham Water Centre , a climbing wall at Peterborough and JetSki. We also went Gliding over the wonderful Dunstable Downs. We are constantly finding new adventures to have - do look at our website to see the fun we have enjoyed since the club was formed.
Not all our activities are of a physical nature.
We sometimes revert to our childhood by finding a "fun" activity, such
as Zap Attax or a Ghost Walk around Cambridge. We have a full social
programme, particularly in the winter months when outdoor activities
- especially those on water - are less enticing.
| We also have an annual residential weekend in Hereford where members flew on zip wires (went to the pub), gorge walking (and went to the pub), abseiling (definitely needed the pub after that), pot-holing (one member got stuck after all that beer) and other outdoor activities. The group wanted to spend a night under the stars on the mountain (who said romance dies at 50?) but it started to drizzle so the stars went out. This picture shows two members canoeing whilst at Longtown in Hereford. |

To quote one of our members "Since I retired, I never dreamed that I would do such things as this."
The Club wishes to acknowledge the kind support of the Foundation for Sports and The Arts which has provided a small grant to offset the cost of some of the sports activities organised in 2001. The Club also wishes to express its gratitude to The National Lottery for a small grant which is being used to offset the costs of Adventure activities.
We have a full programme planned for the coming year. Want to join us and prove to your family that you are not a "wrinklie"? There is no upper age limit - in fact, our two most active members are over 70!
